Tucson's Great Oasis
Many choice places and destinations in Arizona are found along the highways and backroads of our wonderful state—but, few are more special than Tucson’s Sabino Canyon.
The paved road of Sabino Canyon Trail is closed to cyclists on Wednesdays and Saturdays after 9 a.m. Some of the canyon trails are open to horseback riders.
This outdoor wonderland lies along the southern slope of the sky island known as the Santa Catalina Mountains, a short 14 miles from the hustle and bustle of the old downtown pueblo area. Sabino Canyon hosts more than a million annual visitors—who enjoy an assortment of biking, jogging and hiking trails. The views along these trails are marvelous thanks, in part, to a massive earthquake in 1887, that sent giant boulders tumbling down the canyon walls, into theriparian valley.
Sabino Creek begins high up in the desert canyon at an elevation of 6,000 feet, and flows nearly year-round to the desert floor. Here, the cool mountain stream’s swimming holes create a Sonoran Desert oasis. With this constant water supply comes lush plant life and populations of animals—from giant cottonwood trees to mountain columbine; from mule deer to mountain lions.
Vehicles are no longer allowed in Sabino Canyon. Instead, visitors begin their experience at the new visitor center where they pay a fee to park in the large lot. Some visitors take an open-air shuttle into Sabino Canyon. These buses travel the 3.8 miles of paved roads into the canyon, crossing Sabino Creek nine times over low-water rock bridges. Drivers tell the story of Sabino Canyon as they take passengers deeper and deeper into it on this 45-minute tour.
Others prefer to hike the trails. The Sabino Canyon Trail, the Bear Canyon Trail, the Phoneline Trail and the Romero Pass Trail differ in level of difficulty. If you have to choose only one, the most popular and arguably the most beautiful, is the Bear Canyon Trail which extends three miles to Seven Falls.
