Annual National Conference, May 13th through 15th, 2011. The Gluten-Free Food Fair , open to the general public, takes place on Saturday the 14th, from 1:30 'till 5pm at the new Convention Centre in downtown Ottawa.
According to June Williams, Conference Chair and president of the Ottawa Chapter of the CCA, "This is a once-in-a-decade opportunity for the people of Ottawa, the Valley and the Outaouais, as well as visitors from across the country, to sample and purchase a large variety of gluten-free products, all in one place. Everyone who is following a gluten-free diet, along with their families and friends, will enoy this event."
Attendees will be able to learn of and sample an impressive variety of products from top gluten-free food suppliers such as Glutino, El Peto and Kinnikinnick, who will all be present with food samples and information. Conference organizers are also planning Biocard blood screening to identify the possibility of celiac disease. The test, which will be offered at the Fair, provides on-site results in ten minutes. Pre-registration is required at GlutenFreeTest@yahoo.ca .
It is estimated that close to one percent of Canadians suffer from celiac disease, and therefore must avoid all food that contains gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley.
"Celiac disease is a lifelong disorder with many effects on your health and social life," says Daniel Leffler, M.D., Director of Clinical Research at the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. "Celiac disease is for life and can affect nearly every part of the body. Adjustment can be difficult."
Dr. Leffler will also be the conference keynote speaker, and will be joined by expert presenters on the gluten-free diet, presenting information about staying healthy on the diet, along with the proven links between celiac disease and dental defects, arthritis and diabetes.
The Gluten-Free Food Fair is open to everyone, and the $5 fee is more than offset by the free goodie bag and multitude of free samples available at the show. The fair is free to children under 5.
