Westminster Advantage: Mallory Ference
May 23, 2011NEW WILMINGTON, Pa.--After twelve long years in public school, four years in college seems like a very short time. Recent Westminster Graduate Mallory Ference certainly thinks so.
With ambitions to become a school teacher, Mallory prepares for a big milestone: life after college.
It's 6:45 the morning of May 4th at Westminster. On my way to the radio station, I'm walking along the wet asphalt past the town houses where seniors live on campus. It rained last night and the sun is starting its climb over Lake Brittain. As for Mallory, she's up and getting ready for school by this hour. But for Mal, school means keeping 54 third graders in check.
She's student teaching at Mohawk Elementary school, studying fractions with the kids.
I caught up with her after school and we talked about her plans following Westminster.
Joe Ligo: "Right now you're working on student teaching, and after you graduate, do you plan to get a job right away?"
Mallory Ference: "That would ideal, yeah, and in the teaching field too."
Joe: "Your main goal is to get a good teaching job, and move out and be on your own, right?"
Mal: "Yeah, preferably, I mean, I put the four years in for teaching, so I would want my job to relate to that, at least.
Joe: "Do you feel as though Westminster has prepared you well to both be a good teacher and successfully find a job?"
Mal: "I think to be a good teacher, they prepared us really well, but finding a job, not so much, especially being gone everyday student teaching. I'm never in the education department, so I don't really hear about a lot of job opportunities."
Joe: "Now do you have your resume prepared; are you all ready, have you sent out applications or anything like that?"
Mal: "I haven't sent out applications yet, I do have my resume made up. Because of the tax cuts in Pennsylvania right now, I'm not really sure if I'm going to stay around here to look for a teaching job."
Fortunately for Mallory, Westminster has a career center to help students jump into the job market. The career center helps students write resumes, train for interviews, find internships, and much more. In a conference with the head of the career center Jackie Meade, I learned how well informed the staff is, and how that knowledge benefits students like Mallory in finding a job.
