4 flowers are ideal for Oklahoma summers
With determination, however, I learned to play a grand musical instrument, an old Miracord stereo I purchased in the early 1970s. I play it very well and very loudly with the help of big-band legends Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman and Tommy Dorsey.
Naturally, I imagine myself sitting in one of their orchestra brass sections blowing hair-raising notes through a shiny silver Bach trumpet. But alas, when the old stereo turntable stops spinning, I head back to the garden to lead a band of a different sort, cool cats that can flat "jam" in the summer sunshine.
Allow me to introduce several of my most talented players:
Snow Princess
This gorgeous bloomer delivers a wonderful fragrance and waves of tiny pure white flowers throughout the summer. It's one of my all-time favorites for pots and hanging baskets. It has been a gold-medal winner in trial gardens across the U.S. and Europe, and it has performed flawlessly in the Linnaeus Garden in Woodward Park. Grows 4 to 6 inches tall.
Senorita Rosalita
Cleomes (spider flowers) have been around for a long time. I've always loved the unusual spider-like flowers. But there were problems: thorny stems, sticky leaves and frankly, some cleomes actually smelled like a skunk. And, if that weren't bad enough, they procreated all over the garden!
Senorita Rosalita has restored cleomes' reputation. Magnificent dark green foliage is topped with clusters of bright lavender pink flowers. They love Oklahoma heat, bloom with abandon from spring through fall, produce no thorns or sticky substance, and they don't stink. Grows 24 to 30 inches tall.
Lemon Symphony African Daisy
What a daisy! Flower petals are soft yellow and virtually shout, "look at me!" Lemon Symphony is an absolute winner for window boxes, containers and entry gardens where a splash of bright riveting color is needed. Grows 8 to 12 inches tall.
Vista Silverberry Supertunia
I know what you're thinking: Petunias are a dime a dozen; nothing special. Wrong. This is one of our best performers in the Linnaeus Garden, and we grow it in the hottest, toughest location where far less talented annuals give up by mid-summer. Only Vista Bubblegum Supertunia comes close to matching the massive flower count of Vista Silverberry. I'm serious. It's a killer. Grows 8 to 12 inches tall.
These floral cats can play in my botanical band anytime.

and a Staphylea colchica, with its springtime white scented flowers. Wisteria clings to the rectory wall, a stream trickles past candelabra primulas to the vast pale-green and yellow forms of skunk cabbage at the bottom of the tiered lawns,
Overpowering is the odor and almost taste of skunk cabbage. A continuous drip, drip, drip, percusses off my hood, each droplet finding its way down my neck, chilly. Gazing roundabout more vigilantly this time, I notice three different kinds of ferns.
The first sign of spring for my husband is the emergence of the skunk cabbage. Not many people can get excited over a flower so aptly named, but he does. It's really a marvelous plant that can emerge through the snow because it has its own heating

cricut craftin grammy: "Flower" the skunk card from Disney ...
This is the card I made for the BBTB2 challenge this week. The challenge was to make something with a Disney cut. I decided to use my new Disney Classics for the first time and planned to make the either Bambi or Thumper. As soon as I saw this cute little cut of Flower I thought it was perfect. The card is 5 x 7 and the skunk is cut at 4". The title was cut at 2 " from April Showers which I just got yesterday. I have been crafting since in my teens ( a long time ago) and bought my first Cricut almost 1 1/2 years ago. I have become totally addicted to using my Cricut to make cards, decor and especially scrapbook pages. I belong to the Cricut Circle and love to learn from all the ladies on the Messageboards and other blogs. I have started this blog as a record of the projects I make. Besides paper crafts I love to work on weddings, holiday decor and in the past few months I have taken cake decorating classes and am learning to use my Cricut Cake Machine. I have been blessed this past year with two beautiful precious granddaughters who are the joy of my life. I recently retired after teaching 33 years to enjoy being a grammy and to give me time for my crafting obsession.
