Young girl knits bandannas to help shelter dogs

Adopting a disabled animal inspired the Lang Ranch Elementary student to figure out a way to help other dogs find a home.

Samantha, 9, found a way to do that after her dog returned from the groomers sporting a bandanna.

The fourth-grader, who had learned to knit when a friend invited her to a class, decided to create her own knitted version of the canine accessory.

“I made my dog a bandanna, and it actually looked pretty good. I decided we could sell them and donate the money to help dogs that would . . . not (be) adopted,” said Samantha, mindful of her own dog’s rescue.

Samantha set to work with yarn and spent many hours making the custom-sized creations measured for each client’s dog.

It took her about four months to make 20 bandannas. She sold them to friends for $ 5 each, earning $100 for her efforts.

She and her mother, Patricia Smart, searched online for a local rescue organization and decided to donate the proceeds to the Hogan Family Foundation in Newbury Park.

The foundation’s Lifeline 4 Paws rescue support program helps dog rescue organizations pay for medical procedures for seriously injured or sick dogs. The dogs are then placed in permanent homes.

Since its start in 2007, the Hogan foundation has helped about 50 dogs a month through agencies such as Safe Animal Rescue in Thousand Oaks, Bichons and Buddies and Southern California Pomeranian Rescue.

Chris Hogan, executive vice president of the foundation, said Samantha’s donation will go toward the purchase of a cart for a 6-week-old Pomeranian- Chihuahua born without front legs.

The abandoned puppy, named Rocky, was found in a cardboard box in a San Fernando Valley parking lot and brought to the East Valley Shelter in Van Nuys.

Hogan praised Samantha’s generosity.

“We were just so touched by her generosity that she would spend her time and dedication to raise money for our organization,” she said.

Smart said her daughter’s motivation comes from home.

“In our community there’s a great many people in situations of need. It’s part of how we raise our family (to help them),” Smart said.

The bandanna project finished, Samantha, an aspiring actress, has begun making stuffed dogs, which she also plans to sell to benefit rescued dogs.
