Family fights dog bites

The memory of losing a son never really seems to fade.
Carrie and Joey Perks son, Liam, died when he was just 2 years old after a family dog bit him a year and a half ago.
The hard days are still there, Carrie said. Mothers Day wasnt easy.
Because no parent should have to endure the loss, the Perks have made it their mission, in Liams memory, to educate the public on dog bite awareness and created the Liam J. Perk Foundation in hopes to reduce dog bites.
On Saturday, the foundation had its second Liams Family Time Celebration at Rotary Park, where a playground was dedicated to their son.
An estimated 3,000 attended the dog-friendly event, which had dozens of vendors, a dog bite awareness tent and plenty of family activities.
Its good to see the families out here, Joey Perk said. Hopefully, theyre here for the right reasons, and hopefully they are getting something out of it. Its a good day, and it means a lot.
Its a healing day for everyone. We miss our little guy every day.
The Perks said they are growing the foundation as they would their son and hope to see it flourish year after year.

Instead of suppressing memories to avoid the pain of their loss, the Perks have embraced the public spotlight using the foundation as a coping mechanism as well as a tool to save other families from a potential tragedy.
We didnt crawl into a corner, Carrie Perk said. We went public with it.
A decision that has brought them the support of thousands of community members.
