I would much rather be out in the field than be a desk jockey and I am looking forward to getting back out there by Wednesday...that's when Mr. D. (Stephen Dunn) will take his place in this chair. He was supposed to start on Monday but he teaches Photojournalism at two college and this week is finals so I "volunteered" (what was I thinking????) to take his place for a couple more days...some of us have more penance to do than others. So what was my reward for this act of kindness...a longggggg day! It has been almost 10 years since 911 changed our perspective on life and its fragile balance we take for granted most days. Osama bin Laden organized a group of terrorist to hijack four jetliners, launching an attack on some of our nations most famous landmarks. The Twin Towers in Manhattan - a symbol of our nations financial strength...or greed, the Pentagon - a symbol of our intelligence and power. The third target was supposed to be White House - our symbol of democracy, but group of courageous passengers would not let that happen as they fought the terrorist, causing the plane, and all on board, to perish in a field in Shanksville, PA. On Sunday night the people of American and the world were told of the death of Osama bin Laden by president Barack Obama. A mission had been launched to "kill" or "capture" him at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, where he was known to be in hiding. Two helicopters carrying Navy SEALs stormed the compound before daybreak and killed the terrorist leader. When I got to work Monday afternoon the newsroom was buzzing with activity as news stories from the wire services, TV reports, various social media sites and blogs filtered in with information on the assault. Sherry Peters, our dayside assignment editor was scrambling to coordinate with FOXCT, our sister in CT1Media, and our newspaper editors to get the most comprehensive local coverage of the reaction to bin Laden's death. Calls were made to families who lost loved ones in 911 to see if we could interview, photograph or roll video of their reaction. Our 4 o'clock news meeting would provide some insight into what stories we were working on and what we might expect from Chicago, where our Nation and World news pages come to us in the form of a module. We wanted local presence on the A1 cover and then would fill an additional two pages inside with both local, national and international news and photos.
