Southern ousts Jackson State; Softball loses, too
Jackson State blew a five-run lead after six inning and lost to Southern 14-9 Friday night, eliminating the Tigers from the SWAC baseball tournament and ending the Jaguars into Sunday’s championship game against Alcorn State.
JSU finishes the season 27-26 and continues the school’s longest stretch without a SWAC title. The Tigers haven’t won the tournament since 2000, under former coach Bob Braddy.
Meanwhile, the league’s two division winners — West No. 1 Southern and East No. 1 seed Alcorn State — will meet for a one-game championship at 1 p.m. Sunday. The title game will be televised by ESPNU, and the winner gets a spot in an NCAA Regional.
Making their third straight appearance in the championship, the Braves are after their first SWAC crown. Southern is trying to add to its conference-leading 26 titles, a dozen more than second-place JSU.
To reach Friday night’s match against Southern, JSU beat Prairie View 6-2 in an elimination game. The Tigers would have had to beat Southern twice to advance to the SWAC Championship for the first time since 2002.
Sotuhern, which had a whopping seven errors, scored 11 unanswered runs after JSU took an 8-3 lead during a five-run fifth. For the second straight night against JSU, the Jaguars finished with 16 hits. They won Thursday night’s game 13-6.
Desmond Russell, usually a reliever, starter for the Tigers. He pitched six innings, allowing seven hits, seven runs and walking seven. Quintavious Drains, on just two days rest, pitched 1.1 innings and allowed seven hits and seven runs.
Wilmy Marrero’s two-out, full-count, bases-loaded double in the seventh scored three runs and gave the Jags a 10-8 lead.
Alabama beats JSU softball
Appearing in its first NCAA Regional, the Jackson State softball team didn’t have a hit and lost 8-0 to Alabama in five innings on Friday night.
The Lady Tigers (26-21) play an elimination game against Chattanooga at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Alabama freshman pitcher Jackie Traina threw her first career no-hitter. She struck out nine and didn’t issue a walk.
JSU pitchers Tynetta Sims and Breea Jamerson allowed just a combined six hits, but walked five while striking out just one. JSU had three errors.
Congrad. to JSU for at least winning a game[2],but just like i said eariier this week about the pitching order,Nelson should have went in game two.And a well rested Drains in game3.RUSSELL should have went in game1.Look at the game Nelson against Southern earlier this season. Its called match-up people.P-view offense is not that good,JSU with Russell on the hill could have out slug them in game1.Look at who Southern used in game1.I predicted Alcorn bats would make it interesting, but Southern would win it all because of the coaching edge.Im pulling for Alcorn because I played there.I think it will be a sloppy game lots of errors committed.E.Gonzales for Alcorn should be batting 3or4,not 5or6 in that order it might be the difference in this ball game. He’s a junior put the game on him and Perdomo back to back.

Another single by Alcachupas brought in Holliday and Koontz for two more runs in the sixth before Edward Ibuado grounded out to short and scored Jorge Venegas for the Jags final run of the series. Alcachupas went 3-for-4 with a run and three RBI and
Four out of four times, errors cost the Jaguars a run, and the Panthers tacked one more tally onto those to ring up a 5-3 victory in Eastern Plains softball. North Pitt (12-11, 8-4 EPC) scored twice in the first inning, once in each of the next three
The result was four first-inning runs for the Lady Jaguars en route to a 7-5 victory. Game 2 and, if necessary, Game 3 will be played Saturday at Freedom Ridge Park, beginning at 1 pm "We didn't come out at the start of the game like we wanted to,"
The Jaguars piled up ten hits against three Alabama State pitchers, but four errors by the Hornets gave the Jags four unearned runs. Earlier in the day, the Jags' Frazier Hall was named SWAC Player of the Year for the second straight year.
David Garrard's game saving run vs. Steelers | Jacksonville ...
@john42797 You know how you can tell an Actual Steelers fan from a Bandwagoner? The Bandwagon’s always talk about Superbowls. The Steelers Never won a Superbowl when Jacksonville was in the AFC Central did they? The Steelers are a good team, but have nothing on The Jaguars, but it is okay even though we are 12-9 alltime against the Steelers and Even Though we are 5-5 @ Heinz Field. We are 7-2 @ Jacksonville and have won the last 4 Games against the Steelers 3 @ Heinz 1 @ Jax and a Playoff Win.
@JagsJaxFan….what are you talking about since 1995 the Pittsburgh Steelers have the most wins as a franchise since Bill Cowher took over the team…. you OWNED the Central…woopde do…did you do anything with that? any SB appearances?..NO….thought so… and yea thats true…the Steelers have owned the Ravens for division titles and playoff wins..and SB births… the Jags have been the laughing stock of the AFC South… Come on, you cant even beat MAnning..the Steelers did in the playoffs
The Jacksonville Jaguars from 1995 have just been a Better Team than the Pittsburgh Steelers. From 1996-1999 Owned the AFC Central and even in 1995 our first year in the NFL we were 4-12 and still one of our Wins were against the Steelers. Over the Years the Steelers have Owned the Ravens, but Clearly over the past 15 years, The Jaguars have Owned the Steelers. In 2011 The Jaguars play the Steelman @ Heinz Field. Time for another Pittsburgh Loss. Go Jacksonville Jaguars!!!
yes, the Jags would be a good one, after their run last year, that would be perfect
